the Young Canadian Leadership Challenge
VIDEO TOUR ...

YCLC... is a refreshingly new approach to positive youth development. It does not attempt to correct youth. Instead, it has been shown to enable youth from 10-19 to think, feel  and act authentically about the issues they meet every day as youth - like bullying and victimization - and to speak for themselves as  "their own person" -  through discovering for themselves what really matters to them.

Here, a typical team of 6-10 girls (or boys) from 10-19 years of age discover themselves - without any instruction - the thrill of scaling a 12' wall together - which at first seems impossible. Challenge elements* are opportunities for young people to relate to each other in fresh new ways, to persist in the face of adversity, and to unearth latent skills of working together.

*Challenge elements are drawn from Ropes Course learning - physical "puzzles" built in the forest to train executives to "think outside the box" since they were widely used in officer training during World War II. Researchers find that hands-on Ropes Course discovery learning  far eclipses classroom teaching as a learning method - and that learning in this way, instead of fading, is actually enhanced by everyday life.

At one time it was thought that young people would not be able to learn from Ropes Courses. Now such Courses are standard equipment at most youth summer camps. The founders of the Young Canadian Leadership Challenge also train adults. Our work with adults can be seen
