... a weekend-long program of outdoor fun and adventure, offering,
through the powerful tool of discovery-based learning, an opportunity
for youth to discover within themselves - "their own person."
The weekend is
a real adventure similar to televison's Survivor, but with a vastly
different result - everyone survives, everyone thrives, and has fun.
We've combined the "best practices" of many fields - psychology,
sociology, game theory, anthropology, leadership training, outdoor
adventure training eg. Outward Bound and simulation gaming to create a
lively role-playing game in which youth play medieval characters
seeking to graduate into knighthood. Participants engage in challenging
games that are seamlessly blended into a weekend long adventure, the
goal of which is to find the hidden treaure.
The
Results!
They arrive at
the final event, Sunday afternoon, with a set of new skills which
easily and immediately transfer to everyday life. These results are
rarely seen in other youth programs. The direct short term results are
seen largely within their own peer group - self respect, an enhanced
appreciation for others, authentic communication and the initiative
needed to operate in today's world.
Results in relating to adults begin to show up about three months
later. A year later, youth who have participated, even those who have
done nothing else to enhance their results, can be seen to be
resilient, articulate, and to be enjoying the challenges which life
sends their way.
Who can come?
All youth ages
10-19 can easily fit into the mix, those who are thriving already,
those who are struggling, those with some disabilities, those from all
cultures and religions are all welcome.
YCLC Canada Inc. works to help community-based groups
bring a YCLC to youth in their community. Our short term goal is to
deliver the YCLC program in French by training more
French-speaking facilitators. Our long term goal is to spread the YCLC
across Canada with service clubs and government organizations as long
term partners. We welcome adult members of the community, who are
interested in seeing that this generation of youth prosper, to help us
deliver future YCLC’s .
